Beyond ‘White Coat Syndrome’
The name of white coat syndrome might seem pretty much strange for many people. But, this name actually describes a serious health disorder that we should take it into consideration as much as we can. This disorder might go in the same category as another previously written one about the Hypochondriasis.
The white coat is the exact term that confuses people about this disorder. But, do not let this mess up your mind. It is just a medical term that is taken by scientists to refer a specific health disorder that we are coming to detail here.
Who does wear the white coat? Well, obviously teachers, professors, doctors, pharmacists, scientists, and many others wear this colored coat. But, honestly, isn’t it that doctors are the most associated people to this kind of clothes and color. Although recently many doctors started to change their coat’s color to the green, the white coat is still associated with them. Don’t you remember that when you were a little kid, you used to go to doctor who wears a white coat? This is where this term comes from.
The fear of doctors is not always associated with children, but adults also may have this problem. It can be caused due to several causes that we are going to cite below. It might be known as the high blood pressure issue. For many people, the blood pressure increases incredibly, when they go to a hospital or a clinic and they see the doctor. The blood pressure differs in people medical meeting from one of home-located and the other of hospital or medical clinic.
This difference can happen to almost everyone. If you test your blood pressure at home, you will find it is far lower than if you test it in a doctor office or hospital. So, for some people this difference between the home-test blood pressure level and doctor-test one is much greater, which creates a very noticeable and serious condition that we know as The White Coat Syndrome.
By the way, there is another term used for this disorder, which we know as the white coat hypertension. This syndrome, hypertension, disorder, or whatever you may call it is known when a person has very high blood pressure when he is being tested by a doctor, while when he is at home, the blood pressure is just so normal. This makes it quite harder for the doctor to know whether you have actually high blood pressure disorder or you have the white coat syndrome. Therefore, you may face troubles in life due to this confusion.
What are the Causes of the “White Coat Syndrome”?
The blood pressure level is never stable. It lowers and rises over and over according to your situation, what you do, what is surrounding you, or what you feel. So, the white coat syndrome is actually the health disorder that you feel nervous, anxious, scared, and stressed about being tested by a doctor or someone for your blood pressure.
Most of people feel stressed and tenser while being under medical settings, unlike being with family, friends, or whatever the usual situation. Not everyone may notice that, but it happens within us. People who have the big difference in their blood pressure tests (between home and medical setting) are most likely to feel this and are diagnosed with the white coat syndrome.
As we have just said, the white coat syndrome may not have the same effects on everyone; it differs from a person to another. When someone feels so anxious and nervous, the blood pressure level increases for over 30 mmHg. This stands against the safe and clean test of your doctor. Those interruptions and differences in the blood pressure is the most problematic thing about this syndrome.
What can you do for the white coat syndrome?
This is a hard step for many people, but controlling the anxiety, stress, and tension is a very important way to stop the syndrome. It helps to make your blood pressure controlled as much as possible. To manage that, you may only need to have a rest before you go to have your test. The blood pressure rises when you visit a doctor, for whatever the cause is. So, a rest may calm your nerves and manage your anxiety and tension, so that you feel okay about it. When you go to a medical setting, you may feel anxious and nervous, so make sure that you relax and calm in order to relieve all that stress.
In case you see that nothing works and you cannot control your feelings, then you have to discuss that with your doctor. In order to get a better and clearer idea about that, your doctor may ask you to have some home blood pressure tests, or he might step by and see you from a time to another so that he gets the correct idea of your blood pressure. However, this will help you to avoid false diagnosis and your doctor will work out with you to find a solution that suits you.
Does High Blood pressure mean that you got the White Coat Syndrome?
If you are aware of this, your doctor will certainly take this into consideration. So, when you go to get your blood pressure tested, the doctor, nurse, or healthcare provider will have already been aware of the white coat syndrome. Consequently, you will be away of any false diagnosis.
If you develop the white coat syndrome, you certainly have the problem of high blood pressure. That is why you may be necessarily called to test your blood pressure regularly and frequently. If you keep testing your blood pressure regularly and frequently, you will take the first step to lower it and relieve it. Take a medical setting every 6 to 12 months in order to test your blood pressure.
In one hand, if you get the white coat syndrome, you certainly develop the high blood pressure at some particular points (when you see the doctor’s white coat). In the other hand, develop high blood pressure does not necessarily mean you have the white coat syndrome. This is in general how the relationship is between the white coat syndrome and blood pressure.
However, what we may highly recommend you is that you talk to your doctor if you doubt you have this syndrome.
