Violence Effects on Talented Children
I do remember that my dad told me they used to be taught through being beaten every day if they do not learn the regular verbs or multiplication table. This may affect our children in many ways, but we, most of us, do not know those effects yet. A kid is a bloom and still have a lot ahead of him, so being aggressive would affect his personality and his identity, which may lead to serious disorders and problems later in life.
According to the title, we are going to talk about the effects of violence on ‘talented’ children. Well, a child is talented; in a way or another. In facts, we should not care only about the effects of violence on children (or more specifically talented children), but also adults and older people.
Eventually, scientists found that the effects of those events we watch, hear about, and read in newspaper are affecting children; mostly those with a great skill or talent. The effects are serious and we should care about them. Let’s see first the effects of aggressiveness and violence on both adults and children in general!
What are the effects of violence on adults and kids?
The study identified the difference between the impact of violent events’ news o children and on adults. The study occupied different civilizations and cultures. The difference was in the ‘reaction’. The impact of such news has been short-termed among adults, while it lasted for longer time among children.
The study associated the impacts of those news and specific emotions in children, such as stress, fear, anxiety, and worrying. The researchers believe that watching or hearing about aggressive event does affect the mental and psychological health of children.
The effects of violence on children are not the same however. That’s why we said we are going to specify the effects on talented and gifted kids. Gifted or talented kids here mean those scored better results in difference IQ tests and general intelligence.
The study of the effects of violence on talented children:
There are many things that a smart talented kid would pay attention to, and those things do affect them. One of the most serious things that affect those kids is violence. Even the violence in harmless things such as animated movies or cartoon may have an impact.
The study took place in Turkey, last year for over six month. The participant kids were all the same age: ten years old. They have been exposed to two different kinds of news; first ones include violence and the seconds do not. The study’s goal is to see the effects of violence news on the speech ability of those kids.
The study took only kids who were supposed to be less talent than others. There were two categories: one with talented children and the other with less talented ones.
The kids were asked to write specific words before and after watching the films. The films or series had two kinds; one is about a normal story between friends, without any aggressive scenes, while the other is a battle where everyone is in fight: both of them were cartoon films. The results are yet to come.
What did the study result?
The study showed that the effects of violence are numerous. But, the main thing is that violence can limit or affect the talent of the kid causing him troubles in his life later. This happens when they watch things that contain violence.
The talented kids could write so much more words than their peers before watching the films. But, after the talented kids watched the films with aggressive scenes, they scored less words than the less talented kids who watched normal stories. Vice versa; when talented kids watched the same normal harmless stories as the others did, then they scored better in both before and after watching the films. This shows that violence scenes in cartoon could affect the performance of those talented kids.
In general, both categories scored less result when they watched the harmful films, but talented kids had worse effects.
Is the sensitivity in talented kids the reason? And are they that emotional?
People believe that talented and smart kids would be all right if they left alone. The reason behind this is that people have always seen that this kind of kids have better future, and usually reach better goals in life. However, science says the opposite, and that belief, which says that talented kids are okay alone is not correct. This study could prove that talented kids do have weak points and flaws that may affect them very severely. Violence does affect all kind of kids, but the study proved that it affects more the gifted children who have better IQ scores.
The scientists have just started seeking the causes of this difference in effects. Currently, many of those scientists believe that talented and smart kids are more sensitive than the others and they show more sympathy, which affects them. They react more anxiously to news that contain violence events. They do not like cartoons and films that contain aggressive scenes, or in other words; they didn’t like what they watched (violence films) the same way other kids liked their films (normal stories).
